Military absentee ballots, 1942-1944.

Under Public Law 712, approved by U.S. Congress on 1942 Sept. 16, the Secretary of State directed county probate judges to mail ballots to military personnel who requested them. The probate judges compiled lists of the absentee voters to file in the office of the Secretary of State. This series contains the person's name, military address, home town, and precinct. Related material includes: correspondence from soldiers requesting ballots, requests for information on Alabama's voting laws, a copy of Public Law 712, and correspondence from Robert Ramsey of West Virginia who sponsored the bill in the House of Representatives. Also includes letters mailed to soldiers concerning absentee voting but returned by the post office as undeliverable.
